Saxophonist Miguel Zenón reflects on all the music he's presented at the SFJAZZ Center as a 2013-14 Resident Artistic Director (RAD): from large ensemble, multimedia projects, to intimate duo performances, to representing different Latin American voices alongside his working Quartet.

Zenón kicked off his final week as a RAD last night, performing with mentor Danilo Peréz. His Residency continues tonight with Esta Plena, featuring Héctor “Tito” Matos’ Viento De Agua Ensemble. On Saturday, Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza joins Zenón's Quartet, and on Sunday, Cuban percussionist Pedrito Martinez guests.

Bay Area percussionist John Santos reflects on all the musical collaborations, educational opportunities and memorable experiences throughout his long history with SFJAZZ. Santos wraps up his tenure as a 2013-14 Resident Artistic Director this Sunday (3/2) with his newest project Unusual Standards. Four of the Bay Area's greatest vocalists, Faye Carol, Kenny Washington, Kellye Gray and Destani Wolf, join The John Santos Sextet in Miner Auditorium at 4pm for fresh takes on well-known jazz and pop standards, with a Latin jazz twist.

WATCH: Terrence Brewer's Double Album Release Party at SFJAZZ Center

Bay Area guitarist Terrence Brewer kicks off 2014 on a high note, releasing two new albums! Mosaic — Setting The Standard: Vol 2 breaks down well-known standards and builds them back up again, with fresh reharmonization, rhythms, time signatures and sounds. Mi Historia — The Latin Jazz Project features mostly originals with Afro-Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms. Brewer's Double Album Release Party happens next Thursday (2/27) and Friday (2/28) in Joe Henderson Lab at the SFJAZZ Center.

WATCH: John Santos ~ "Un Danzón Pa' Cachao, Una Descarga Pa' Walfredo"

This month, Resident Artistic Director John Santos brings together a monster group to pay tribute to legendary Cuban bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez and living Cuban percussion master Walfredo de los Reyes. Calling the two-night engagement at the SFJAZZ Center "Un Danzón Pa' Cachao, Una Descarga Pa' Walfredo," Santos celebrates the classic Cuban danzón and descarga (Cuban jam session) traditions, which these two latin giants defined throughout their prolific careers.

Joining Santos's working Sextet is saxophonist/clarinetist Paquito D'Rivera, Walfredo de los Reyes himself, the great timbalero Orestes Vilató, percussionist Javier Navarrette and The Classical Revolution Trio, to really make the danzónes sing! The eclectic ensemble plays two shows in Miner Auditorium on January 18th & 19th. On the 18th, Santos hangs with the group post-concert to further explain danzónes and descargas!

To preview the concerts, Santos hosts a Listening Party next week on Wednesday, January 8th, focusing on the vital contributions and lasting legacy of both Cachao and Walfredo.

Resident Artistic Director John Santos dropped by the SFJAZZ Center to talk about his upcoming Residency. Afterward, he grabbed some drum sticks and performed an improvised piece on the Center's staircase!
