Last night, we kicked off the first Hotplate show of the 2013-14 season with The Marcus Shelby Quartet (shown in the photo above) performing an incredible rendition of John Coltrane's groundbreaking 1960 recording Giant Steps. For a little background of the monthly event, SFJAZZ Hotplate is a concert series in the Joe Henderson Lab that features Bay Area’s most gifted musicians re-imagining a famous recording of a jazz legend. There is another layer to the artistic programming of the event, as we celebrate artists whose birthday falls within the same month as the show. Coltrane's birthday is September 23rd and that's why his tribute is this month.
Next month will feature Si Perkoff and his group Theloniousphere performing music from Thelonious Monk's classic 1957 recording Brilliant Corners. The show will take place on Monk's actual birthday which is October 10th.
