WATCH: Marcus Shelby on his 'Harriet Tubman & The Blues' Family Matinee

Watch as Bay Area bassist, bandleader and composer Marcus Shelby walks through his musical tribute to freedom fighter, Civil War hero, and Women's Suffrage champion Harriet Tubman at the SFJAZZ Center. Shelby has extensively researched and composed music that pays homage to Tubman, inspired by her profound use of field cries, works songs, and spirituals to free herself and countless other slaves. This Saturday (2/8), SFJAZZ Education honors Black History Month with a special Family Matinee presentation of Harriet Tubman & The Blues with Marcus Shelby Quintet and legendary vocalist Faye Carol. The concert will be followed by a Family Workshop in Joe Henderson Lab.

An interview between KPOO Radio host Tom Porter and Marcus Shelby aired earlier today. Stream it for free on SFJAZZ Soundcloud.
