"Prized Possession," the photograph used as the album cover, comes from SFJAZZ Photographer Laureate Jim Goldberg's acclaimed Open See Collection—telling the story of refugees, immigrants, and trafficked individuals journeying from their countries of origin to their new homes in Europe. You can pick up a copy of Goldberg's Open See Collection at the SFJAZZ Box Office.

The award gives the SFJAZZ Collective some well-deserved recognition, highlighting but one chapter of its extensive book. To celebrate its ever-growing legacy of music, the Collective (with new members Warren Wolf, Obed Calvaire and David Sanchez) embarks on an extensive domestic tour throughout March and April, commemorating its 10th Anniversary. Jim Goldberg's "Prized Possession" Art Installation at SFJAZZ Center

Jim Goldberg's "Prized Possession" hanging in the entryway to Miner Auditorium inside the SFJAZZ Center.

Those who've come to the SFJAZZ Center in the past two weeks might have noticed the new photography installation in the lobby. SFJAZZ Photographer Laureate Jim Goldberg installed a pigment print of his iconic photograph "Prized Possession"—the same photograph used as the album cover of the SFJAZZ Collective's 2012 album Wonder: The Songs of Stevie Wonder—courtesy of the artist, Robert Mailer Anderson, Stephen Wirtz Gallery, and Pace MacGill Gallery. Next time you stop by the SFJAZZ Center for a show or drink, check out Goldberg's photo in person!

A master artist admired for his innovative use of image and text to tell stories in poetic ways, Jim Goldberg  has produced a rich body of work over the last 30 years, and is presently a professor at the California College of Art and member of the famed Mangum Photos agency. Goldberg's "Prized Possession" comes from his acclaimed Open See Collection, which tells the story of refugees, immigrants, and trafficked individuals journeying from their countries of origin to their new homes in Europe. You can pick up a copy of Jim Goldberg's Open See Collection online.

The SFJAZZ Photographer Laureate chair was created to further the call and response between photography and jazz, celebrating their mutual search for understanding of self and the musicality of life.
