Why is music important to the world?

SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Zakir Hussain

At a SFJAZZ Family Matinee back in October, a kid asked SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Zakir Hussain: "Why is music important to the world?"

Zakir offered a profound response — a must watch!

Hambone! The Music of the Body

"Life has its own rhythms, we just have to learn how to dance!" Cristian Andrei Nica. Last weekend SFJAZZ Education partnered with the International Body Music Festival to produce an outstanding Family Matinee, Hambone! This was the biggest turnout an Education event has received this season! Everyone in the audience was engaged and had a great time. It was incredible to see the art of music and dance work together so seamlessly to create a fulfilling experience.

Following the concert was a Hambone Workshop in the Joe Henderson Lab. The space was completely filled and we had to turn folks away. Below is a photo of the participants warming up their bodies for some body music.

Each month SFJAZZ Education hosts a Family Matinee & Workshop. Next month is An Unnerving Look at the Holidays, a holiday concert featuring Lemony Snicket, Marcus Shelby, and the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars.
