Last Thursday night, the
SFJAZZ Hotplate Series brought saxophonist
Robert Stewart and keyboardist
Chester Thompson into Joe Henderson Lab to honor the great Hammond B-3 organist
Jimmy Smith and his seminal album
Back At The Chicken Shack. The heavy-hitting quartet also featured the great
Calvin Keys (Ray Charles, Ahmad Jamal) on guitar and
Ron E. Beck (Tower of Power, Sergio Mendes) on drums. For an encore, the group rocked out on one of Chester Thompson's own numbers from his time with
Tower of Power. Below are select shots from the evening, courtesy of James Knox and Chuck Gee.

Every second Thursday, the Hotplate Series in the Joe Henderson Lab features Bay Area’s most gifted musicians re-imagining a famous recording of a jazz legend. There is another layer to the artistic programming of the event. We celebrate artists whose birthday falls on the same month as the show. Jimmy Smith was born December 8th, 1925.
