September 2012 SFJAZZ Hotplate Mix

This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features local trombone legend Mike Rinta paying tribute to one of the trailblazers of the post-swing era, J.J. Johnson. This event will take place this Thursday night at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street) with DJ Pat Les Stache starting things off spinning a choice selection of bebop era jazz gems roughly around 8pm. The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session with SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca MauleĆ³n on the fascinating life and times of the legendary jazz trombonist.

This exclusive Hotplate mix highlights just some of JJ Johnson's most notable recordings, including some his collaborative work he did with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding, and Kenny Dorham. With one listen, it's easy to see why many in the jazz world considered him to be the finest trombonist to ever pick up the instrument. ENJOY!
