July 2012 SFJAZZ Hotplate Mix

This month's SFJAZZ Hotplate features beat guru Wally Schnalle paying tribute to fusion master Billy Cobham this Thursday night at Amnesia (853 Valencia Street). The evening will also include the Front Burner multi-media session on the fascinating life and times of the legendary jazz drummer, led by SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca MauleĆ³n during intermission.

This exclusive Hotplate mix features choice selections from many of Billy Cobham's most groundbreaking recordings as both a leader and as a sideman. Even though Cobham has made his mark as being widely considered as the greatest jazz-fusion drummer of his time, the heavy-hitting Panama-born musician and composer has consistently showcased through a wide range of recordings the overall complexity and diverse nature of his playing. Not only does, the mix highlight some of his classic fusion cuts like "Sorcery", "Stratus", and "Nickels and Dimes", the mix also touches upon some of his Latin, soul, and electronic/dub explorations. ENJOY!
